“A Members Showcase”

In the interest of getting to better know our Guild members, I am asking members who entered quilts in the 2022 HOC Quilt Show to bring ONE of these quilts to the meeting to share and talk about briefly. It will be fun to connect the faces with the quilts we saw earlier this year.

There is space/time for only fifteen members, so to reserve your spot please contact me via phone or email me at programs@coastalquilters.org. This is open to those attending live and via zoom. We will also have our customary show and tell presentations for members to share current creations.

David Owen Hastings
“Visible Mending”

Visible mending is a current trend which combines many historic handwork techniques, such as Japanese sashiko and boro, Indian kantha, and even All-American flower-power embroidery from the 1960s.

SLOW STITCHING IS GOOD FOR THE HEART, AND THE PLANET

3 hours: Denim blue jeans and jackets are perfect garments to practice this blend of decorative repair work. Enjoy the process of unplugging, letting go, and stitching without a plan. Learn a series of techniques for adding texture, design, and structural repair to your favorite garments.

Visible mending can also be a decorative element added to quilts and home goods. There’s something about old-meets-new that is so appealing. A PDF materials list will be emailed to participants in advance, and tips for purchasing starter kits will be shared.

ZOOM WORKSHOP DETAILS

  • Get a short introduction to mending traditions from a range of cultures, including 1960s America.
  • Learn about types of thread, fabric and tools for visible mending.
  • Using a worn garment, or some practice fabric, prepare to stitch!
  • This is a very simple and relaxing technique, and I will share tips for getting great results

A complete PDF supply list, plus step-by-step notes and templates will be emailed to each participant. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time.

This is an all-levels class. You should be comfortable threading a needle, how easy is that? I look forward to sharing and sewing with you!

Patricia Belyea
“The Unknowing of Creativity”

Patricia shares her creative approach to developing new ideas for original quilt designs. Leapfrogging from one compositional concept to the next, Patricia takes you on a journey of exploration with her newest series of quilts—Big Grids with Inserted Curves—made with vintage Japanese yukata cottons and other global fabrics.

At age 50, Patricia Belyea took her first trip to Japan. At 53, she made her first quilt. Once she started quilting, Patricia worked on projects during every waking hour (and hours she should have been sleeping!).

Then Patricia discovered vintage Japanese yukata cottons and she had found her calling. These hand-dyed fabrics with graphic patterns and luscious colors seemed ideal for making stunning quilts.

Today Patricia co-owns Okan Arts with her daughter Victoria. The small family business imports vintage Japanese textiles for adventuresome quilters. Patricia teaches online quilting workshops focused on curved piecing to students around the world. Also, she and Victoria lead quilting and textile tours to Japan.

“Make A Baby Quilt Using Curved Templates Of Your Own Design”

In the past, you may have bought a plastic template to make a certain quilt block. Now you can design and make your own curved templates for repeated blocks.

We start with the basics of making templates (from freezer paper!) and move to a confident approach for sewing curved seams (that are flat!).

The workshop project is a simple baby quilt filled with easy, repeated blocks—made with your own templates.

"All About Fabric: An Insiders View of the Industry

Learn why we are now paying up to $14.00 a yard.  It’s all about the fabric industry, about the three types of printed fabrics: batiks, flat printed and digital.  Being an Ambassador for Hoffman Fabrics, working with the Hoffman family, pattern designing, curating, setting up their challenge as well as giving warehouse tours, I have lots to share. I think you’ll find this information insightful and interesting.

Twinkle:
Improvisational Design and Technique Class

Twinkle is both easy to make it and to make it modern with your fabric choices and color blocking. The block is a liberated star. I fell in love with it when I made my super-sized star quilt.

No two blocks are alike… different sizes, colors, fabrics, dimensions! This makes it so personal and unique.

Create a Liberated Eight Point Star quilt using a variation of the nine-patch block. Learn how to place different size blockstogether into one big, beautiful quilt. In this class you will learn about improv sewing, designing blocks with personality, while keeping your work squared and accurate.

This nonprofit organization is committed to educating the public about the history of HIV/AIDS, honoring those lost to the disease, raising awareness about the ongoing pandemic and giving solace to those who have lost a loved one through the production of quilt memorial panels.

Quilt Project Gold Coast is a locally based nonprofit with an all-volunteer group and no overhead. All funds go directly to displays and HIV/AIDS awareness raising, and our volunteer efforts include information booths, displays at health fairs, churches, synagogues, colleges and festivals, as well as a speakers bureau and our very fun Quilting bees.

Julia McLeod
"Everything but the Cotton"

Let’s explore the world of quilts that were made with what I call ‘Not Cottons’.

When quilters don’t have access to a stash of quilter’s cotton, what do they turn to? This one hour lecture, trunk show and Q & A session shows quilts – antique and modern – made of wool, silk, polyester and more. The trunk show of my own work shows what you can create with neckties, saris, kimonos and other unusual, ‘not cotton’ textiles.

Workshop September 15
9am - 3pm     In-Person

"Starting With Silk"

To prepare for this class, watch these short videos on How to Deconstruct a Necktie and Applying Fusible Interfacing.

Many of us have silk treasures from trips abroad, neckties or prom dresses that are too special to cut up so we leave them tucked away in a drawer or box. It’s time to get them out and make something beautiful!

This workshop has three elements: You’ll begin by determining the fiber content of your fabrics by using the burn test. We will then cover two very different ways to work with silk: First, a very free, improvisational piecing technique I call ‘Pieces, Pairs and Panels’ and second, a foundation piecing method that gives stability and ultra-precise results, even with the lightest weight silks.

Working with your stash, you’ll construct elements in these two techniques that can be combined into a small, pillow-sized finished piece.

There is no required kit, but the following will be for sale at the workshop:
Curated Silk Packets - $15
1/2/yd. cuts Dupioni Silk - $12
Fusible interfaci ng - $4/yd

"Tiny Piecing"

“Do you have a treasure trove of unused scraps in bins and ziplock bags stuffed in every corner of your sewing space? Do you struggle with what to do with all these special leftovers from your beloved quilts?

Fret no longer, tiny piecing is here!
Giucy Giuce designed the foundation paper pieced Mini Series with scrap busting in mind. These patterns are designed to be made in a variety of sizes, ranging from 1" to almost 8" (some can be made even larger when combined). Join Giucy Giuce as he teaches you all the tips and tricks for tiny piecing success.

These blocks are more than just cute little quilts. Use them to embellish bags and pockets, make holiday ornaments or coasters with them, frame them for your studio... the possibilities are endless! This class is ALWAYS a blast! Don't be intimidated by the size of the piecing. You'll be amazed at what you can achieve with just a little courage.

No prior FPP experience required.”

Front Porch Festive Quilt Show

All are invited to attend this Festive Online Event
( Even if you have never attended a zoom event in the past.)

The Zoom Holiday party will be Friday, December 22, and will include the Front Porch Festive Quilt Show. This year we are invitingg you to submit one or more quilts that cover holidays of all kinds, and all the days in between.

Part 1: Your Quilt Entries
Be thinking about a quilt (any size) you've made since the beginning of the pandemic. That's the only requirement! This could be a quilt you're still working on or one you want to make between now and December 15. It might be one you finished in March 2020! It's up to you. Again, any size, any theme, any color.

Sometime between now and December 15 take two pictures of your quilt - one of the entire quilt and the other a close-up - on your front porch or by your front door. If you live in an apartment and the hallway really isn't conducive to good photos, feel free to take a picture outside in the yard or at the park or wherever. Your front door or porch or out- door spot can be decorated for the holidays or not - up to you!

Send your two photos to: zoom@coastalquilterssb.org by December 15 with the subject, "Festive Quilt Show." We'll compile them into an online show for our Zoom party on December 22!

AND / OR...

Part 2: Your Craft Entries
Submit up to 3 ccrafty creations. They can be holiday related... or not! Take two photos of each - one of your entire crea- tion and the other a close-up - in front of your front door or on your front porch, or, in the absence of those, an outdoor spot. Submit those photos to zoom@coastalquilterssb.org by December 15 with the subject “Festive Quilt Show" and we'll include them in our online show on December 22.

So you know your assignment, if you choose to accept it... and we hope you will!! Along with every- thing else planned for that online get-together, we think this will be a fun time!

Part 3: Your Bag Exchange
Little Bag Gift & Recipe Exchange: Participants will complete and mail their exchange 'bag' with a fave recipe enclosed by Dec. 10 for a surprise reveal at the zoom party.

Part 4: Your Chapeau
Festive Chapeau (Hat): Wear something festive and maybe win a prize!

And last but not least, your daytime adult beverage... to sip together.
